New: Mahr offers an innovative measuring concept for the turbocharger shaft with “MarShaft Scope” for the measurement of surface shape on the turbocharger vane

The turbocharger has become increasingly important in passenger cars worldwide – in order to increase motor performance as well as to meet the required CO2 reductions. Now Mahr has developed a new measuring concept for quality assurance that goes beyond the previous measuring methods: Optical measuring sensors offer a highly precise and fast testing of the workpiece as well as for the first time the entire measurement of the surface shape.

In view of the environmental policy framework for the reduction of CO2, turbochargers are the international trend amongst car manufacturers. The heart of the turbocharger is the shaft, which is subject to extremely high loads. Only with the highest production quality is wear prevented. Mahr has developed an innovative measurement concept to secure the full quality of the shaft in the turbocharger. The application specialist for precision engineering implements its modern shaft measuring station "MarShaft Scope". The measurement system uses a matrix camera (live camera), enabling it to measure more quickly than conventional 3D measuring machines. The special feature of the Mahr measuring concept is that the matrix camera can completely measures the surface shape and dimensions of the turbocharger vanes for the first time.

In the "MarShaft Scope" measuring unit, the measurement process is easy to handle with software developed by Mahr. The target geometry is generated by 6 input parameters. The measurement system records within 100 seconds the surface form completely and reliably with millions of pixels, and measures it completely (complete vane geometry or surface form) - in contrast to conventional measurement methods such as with a line camera, which always only captures only partial areas.

In addition to the surface shape, the "MarShaft Scope" captures in parallel other relevant characteristics such as diameter, length, and optionally thread in the same measurement set-up. The procedure for measuring the turbocharger shaft is designed for use directly in production where the turbocharger shafts are made.
